1. How can I pay my taxes?

Payments will be accepted at the Office of the Tax Collector, City Hall, 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT from 7:30 am to 6 pm, Monday through Wednesday, and from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm on Thursdays (office is closed on Fridays). Please note credit cards are not accepted in the office. Also, delinquent motor vehicle taxes must be paid with cash, money order, or certified bank check, per City of Danbury Ordinance Sec. 18-24.

You may also use our drop box located to the right of the main entrance of City Hall. Please put your payment in an envelope and include your bill coupon. If you need a receipt for your payment, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment. Please note do not put cash in the drop box.

In addition, property tax payments may be made at the Danbury branches of the Ives Bank and Union Savings Bank, during the months of July, October, January, and April. Please note the following regarding payments at the bank branches:

1. Only current taxes may be paid at the bank branches. Delinquent taxes may not be paid at any bank branch.
2. You may not pay water and/or sewer taxes at the bank branches.
3. Credit cards are not accepted at the bank branches.

The City of Danbury also offers online payments via echeck or credit card. You can link directly to the payment pages for property taxes or water and/or sewer taxes at the Tax Collector homepage. Please note that our online vendor is Invoice Cloud, and they are responsible for processing and emailing you confirmation of payments. Invoice Cloud charges the following fees for online payments.

Credit Cards: Property tax 2.95%, water and sewer $5.95 per transaction maximum $500 per transaction. Echeck: $0.95 cents. You will receive an email confirmation following your payment.
*Rejected payments due to incorrect information or insufficient funds will be charged a $20 non-sufficient fund fee.

2. How do I change my mailing address?

Change of mailing address for real estate and personal property can be made through our website.  Water and/or sewer taxes must be made through the Tax Assessor’s Office. The Assessor’s Office may be reached at 203-797-4556. 

Mailing address changes for motor vehicle taxes must be made through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This may be done by using the following link to the DMV website.

3. What Interest charges will incur for late payment of tax and/or water and sewer bills?

By state statute, once a bill becomes delinquent, the rate of interest charged is 18% per annum (or 1.5% per month). From the time the bill becomes due (the date of the bill). interest accrues on the first day of each month with the minimum interest charge being $2.00.

4. I closed my business before July 1. Why am I receiving a personal property tax bill?

Taxes are assessed on October 1, and billed the following July. If your business was active on October 1, you are liable for the full year tax. If your business was not active on October 1, please complete the Closed Business Form

5. My real estate bill says grand list 2020, but I bought my house in January 2021. Do I owe these taxes?

Yes. Real Estate Taxes are assessed each October 1 and billed the following July. The grand list 2020 real estate taxes become due and payable on July 1, 2021, and cover the July 2021 through June 2022 tax period. These are due in 4 equal installment on July 1, 2021, October 1, 2021, January 1, 2022, and April 1, 2022.

6. I am selling my house. How do I remove my name from the real estate and water and sewer tax?

When the deed is filed with the Town Clerk’s Office, the information will be recorded and the Tax Assessor’s Office will make the necessary changes on the land records for the property.

7. I have paid off my mortgage. How do I get my real estate tax bill sent to me?

If you have paid off your mortgage, you should notify the Tax Collector’s Office at 203-797-4541. This will allow the office to update your records and send you a real estate tax bill for you to pay.
